Merrick in Prague
Oct 01, 2000, 10:48
and there was me thinking that I would like to visit a wonderful country and sample some wonderful sights, people and beers.

Thats Prague scrubbed off my list of places to visit - for a few more years.

I pity the people who still have to live with it all on a daily basis.

It takes some form of uprising before you realise the crap that is still behind the regime and this sounds extreme. So why is it not reported to us in dear old Blighty as being so?

Now that is the regime that we live under but which is scarier or the more extreme?

Keep it coming Merrick.

I knew those bullies would be capable of much more if they could kick someone on the ground repeatedly as I saw on the telly.

For anyone wondering what this is all about read Merrick's report from Prague.

Still a wonderful city with wonderful people, Shrimp. Let's just see how Western governments bring those nazies to shame.

Ho hum.

I hardly ever switch on the telly for fear of falling asleep on the couch and becoming a potato but I am sure it is all over the headlines, being a gross violation of human rights and blah blah blah...

Well, the mainstream media focussed on one or two distracting incidents; notice how *every* report contained the words 'molotov cocktail' in the headline or first sentence. We're not clear, but it seems that between two and ten were used. Hardly a major part of it.

The real story is that the Conference Centre was surrounded at a radius of 200-500 metres, and despite 11,000 police some protesters actually got in. Loads of delegats stayed away for the next day, so they cancelled the third day. now that, in my book, is a result.

For a detailed write-up on the protest see the new article in the Features section 'Rrague: The True Story'.

Good to be back!
