Well..It is classed by the US (for PR purposes) as an SDI weapon. However, it's origins lie in the early radio frequency based weapons both the US and the UK were developing after the end of the secon world war. To all intents and purposes (lloking at the hisotry of the thing) it is primarily an offensive weapon which just happens to be useful for taking ICBM's down.
