Very nicely put, sir!
Personally, I take the approach that we are *accelerating* a possible natural part of the cycle.
By this I mean not just that we have added to the effect but we are continuing to add to the effect at a growing rate. So I am using the true meaning of acceleration and don't just mean 'speeding up' which would imply a constant rate of contribution.
So I suppose that, if what I say is the way it is, this means that when the problem was first announced it wasn't necessarily a problem then but it is now. And becoming more so every day. If people had stopped and heard what was being said then it possibly wouldn't be becoming a problem today.
That sounds rather jumbled - I hope it says what I mean.
As you rightly say all reasons for ignoring this was (and still is) economic. AND THAT SUX BIG EGGS!!

just for the record i do believe that the human species is causing global warming, or at the very least accelerating this so-called 'natural cycle'... just in case my sarcasim doesn't come across...
for wotever reason, intentional or not, i believe that we are a self-destructive species and i will be quite suprised mind, if we survive to see the fruiation of global warming before nuking ourselves off mother earth...
