It's clear that western society (well, the USA anyway) is overdue for major reconstructive surgery. Can't speak for others, but this nation is wildly overleveraged, myopic, and disconnected from reality. A lot of assumed privilege, a lot of assumed superiority.
Meanwhile, much of the rest of the world has not just caught up, but has moved beyond us. This is a heretical notion to the flag wavers, still sitting on their 1950s laurels.
Osama BinLaden has won- he said his goal was to drive the USA into bankruptcy, and that's exactly what the damn Bush administration has done, playing right into his hands.
All empires crumble, eventually, and so be it. But as we've seen in the post USSR Asia, or in the post invasion Iraq, it's a messy, unstable business that leaves a lot of blood in its wake.
I await the coming meltdown of the USA (and it's coming very, very soon) with both dread and a sense of inevitability.
