Being old and crabby (who knew!) I think there should be a big difference in punishments between partly rectifiable damage and absolute loss. (That's why I find Historic England at Stonehenge so despicable.)

Ornithologists? (In which case a telling off)

Or Shooters? (In which case an execution).

Just shows how important it is to go and record these places. Morons such as this can't be reasoned with and this is happening to so many places out of the public eye... I mean, who cares about a pile of old stones?

When you stop to think about it almost every upland cairn has been 'amended' - i.e. vandalised, with any internal content trashed - by walkers to some degree. Yet no one gives a damn? Impossible to police.

I think that in my day I could have been one of those mindless youths, i certainly had school mates who did such mindless things (as opposed to vandalism )this was mostly around building sites ,not sites of historical importance. We lived near the Roman Wall and climbed over it and that was about it. I am not defending their actions ,so I hope that they are found and maybe eventually one or two of them will realise what they have done. I think that they were very lucky that none of them suffered any injuries . 5 mindless kids reflecting our mindless thoughtless society.

Having been to Brimham rocks a few times, I can attest to it's status as beauty spot, for me it is the best place in Yorkshire. Naturally I am appalled at the needless destruction of something so lovely, Brimham rocks is now ever so slightly not as good as it once was.
And yet, I've been mindless on occasion, I've rolled rocks down hills and watched with fascination at my handiwork. Hasn't anyone else been so bored they wanted to watch a rock explode. For some, the world isn't a very interesting place, they don't watch with interest as a bird flies by, they don't see shapes in clouds, and the certainly don't wonder about the nature of the universe. In all likelihood they wont ever get why everyone is telling them off.

Ps it's good to see that so many complainers have actually been to Brimham rocks taken photos and shared them for all to wonder at.
