Can you get decent enough resolution now to show stones 'n that?

I've been messing about with Lidar data sets and QGIS recently. Unlike down south the data coverage for Scotland is limited. Mainly areas with flood risk as it was commissioned by/for SEPA.

The few hillforts I've come across look OK but stone circles are tricky due to either resolution or me being rubbish at it.

juamei - it will be great to see how you get on with QGIS. Do you have access to different resolution data sets? I wonder if they are better quality than the ones up here?

I've upload a quick image of 4 sites to give an idea of the resolution of stones from circles I'm getting. There's probably better out there as I'm a bit clueless with these sort of things.

Bottom left - Loudon Wood RSC - Just make out a few stones and circle shape in the clearing.

Top Left - Aikey Brae RSC - Not bad at all. You can see stones and the recumbent.

Top Right - Clava Cairns - You can see the stones round the bottom of the NE cairn best

Bottom Right - A Hillfort - Just added to show probably what Lidar is best for. any guesses which one (clue - it's in southern Scotland)?

Hey Thelonius.

I'm still playing about. The environment agency in England has released data on mostly 1m resolution, but some 0.5m and some 0.2m. The higher the resolution the better the picture!

I've not done much with stone circles yet, but the ones I have played about with the stones are clear.

I hadnt realised there was free Scottish data, I am hoping to redo most of my hillfort lidars on here which are 1m from the houseprices.io map. Trouble is each one takes 30 mins minimum, so I may need to learn python and work out how to automate the QGIS process...

Here is gamelands. It falls between two squares, not sure whether the line between is actually blank or if they should be touching.

Hi juamei

It would be interesting to see the difference between 1m resolution, 0.5m and 0.2m for the same site.

I'm not really sure what resolution the ones up here are.

Learning python is taking it up a level or 3!

Aye, even finding the lidar is a bit slow to do for every site, but I might be able to do a diff between 1m and 0.5m for Avebury. There doesnt seem to be much 0.2m about.

Re python, I'm a developer by trade (though more manager now), so another language on top of the 4 or 5 I am reasonably proficient in isnt too worrying for me.
