spencer wrote: I recommend Hilaire Belloc if you haven't read some of his perhaps obscure 'history' works on England. More than just a penner of lighthearted or cautionary poetry. Again, old but good. Well I never knew he wrote history books, thank you for that. My first choice would be 'Servile State' as I have just ordered two books by more modern authors today, Naomi Klein and Paul Mason. Tiompan has touched upon an earlier thread which is also quite interesting.....

"The History of Mr Polly" one of the earliest existentialist novels . Thanks Herbie . Paul Mason did visit Wigan Casino , maybe even a regular .

You're welcome to your opinion, George, and I'm as respectful of that as I am sure you are of mine. Anyway, Belloc was Belloc. Are you familiar with Hackett's views, btw?

Read The Old Road, Thelma. Out of stock at Amazon Books temporarily, but at least you can get the ISBN there, turn the tables and order from a proper bookshop : D HA!!! His Wiki entry's pretty comprehensive. First Class hons in History at Oxford. And an influence on Syd Barrett. And Monty Python (Terry Jones in particular, I'd reckon (poor guy, don't know if you know what's now happened to such a nice man and great brain : ( : ( : ( ))
