Interesting that the corner of the capstone on the bottom photo- http://ancient-cornwall.wikidot.com/hiac:zennor-quoit is well clear of the floor, it's now below it, do you think the capstones slipped down more, or that more cairn material has gone since the photo or the ground has risen???

I think Willis' drawing tells a tale Paul. When I first saw the quoit I immediately thought the lid originally fitted directly on top of the sloping flankers. I then saw Borlase's drawing showing that ridiculously thin topped rear support propping it up so had to take a step back and consider. That's where I left it. But look at the capstone, it appears to be purposely held in place from sliding down by a shaped stone which it locks into near the ground!

Is that not the stump of a now gone support stone ?

Looking again it seems there were two of those little stumps, one iether side with the support stone some way behind.

Indeed, Borlase shows one on the left side as well. Interesting

Just tossing ideas about here. Borlase drew in what he saw which was a capstone raised on a single thin pillar. But what if originally it was flat down on the sloping flankers and someone purposely raised it with the intention of turning it into a building of sorts? We can believe Borlase but it doesn't mean it was always like that!

Or maybe it had 3 rear support stones? Who knows.

Is that an actual quote Paul ? if so from whom ?

Read it in some book not sure which one, i don't really believe what i read in books but believed it to be true because it said he heard of the blasting and went and paid him to stop, it could have happened in the tinners arms at Zennor, but the book certainly said he went and stopped it while it was happening, you never know with books though.

I've read it umpteen times myself but one writer just copies what another said :-(

Yes that's one of the reasons you have to be careful of believing what you read, you're right untruths do get copied way to easily.
