Wouldn't it be nice....
Sep 09, 2006, 11:44
...if this notice was attached to the NT or EH boards at our favourite sites.
From Thelma at Heritage Action...

"The following sign can be found in Cornwall, and I thought it might be appropriate to copy it here, as it may give some people pause for thought;-"

Please take care not to cause accidental damage when visiting Ancient Sites. Lighting fires, digging holes or burying items damages the sites, preventing archaeological study and understanding. Fire can also crack stones, or spread and then kill animal and plant life, and even heat & wax from candles damages moss and lichens that take decades to recover.

Please also consider carefully before leaving any physical offerings; biodegradable things decay and artifical materials are inappropriate; both can accumulate and be seen as litter by other visitors. Trees can be harmed by the weight of items tied to them, and bark can be damaged by rubbing or cutting by tight knots, which can also kill branches.

Any of this physical damage will also damage the spirit of the place - please respect the land and all its inhabitants; spirits, animals, plants and stones.

Don't change the Site, let the Site change you.

Jim.
