I'm sure most life forms on the planet would be far better suited to managing it than us ....

Let the Ants Try was a sci fi story from the 1940s. A bloke decided society was rotten so went back in time to engineer ants to have the ability to grow large. He returned to his own time to see the effect and was promptly eaten by a ten foot high ant...
