the north yorkshire moors are covered in howes (3000 last count), most of which are burial mounds we even have a couple of villages named after howes e.g. Carlin Howe.
According to Richard Blakeborough, who made a great study of Yorkshire dialect, our dialect is a combination of anglo saxon and scandanavian (old norse, fresian, swedish and danish).
