There's an example of a reproduction cup n' ring carving done on Millstone Grit using an ankler in Ilkley Museum. Reckon they used possibly a mixture of ankers and hard stone hammer and chisels. I'd like to think that when they were created, they were also painted with colour... maybe just my fancy tho'.

I'm a big fan of the painted rock art theory too, but more in relation to passage tombs. Imagine Newgrange, Knowth or Gavrinis painted!!! WOW!!!

I'd like that to be true. I'm sure Jane could do a fantastic What If picture. But surely if it was then microscopic traces of non-organic pigments would have been found?
