Hi Jane,
How are you and yours?
As far as I can gather there's still some scope for a pre-17th Century date for the Giant. He doesn't look very modern to me. The idea that he's there to take the piss out of the Puritans seems a bit tenuous.

Aha! He must have been wearing a pin-stripe suit, because that would camouflage nicely behind wire fencing.

not the Puritan theocrats in Dorchester (see Underdown, Fire from Heaven)
have had something to say when a massive piece of porn appeared on the local
pastures.
The earliest reference to Uffington's Horse is only 1586, but current
evidence suggests it is much older. Surely that should give pause for
thought in these matters.

I reckon it was mass hypnosis. Come to think of it, I had a dream that I thought Stonehenge was the very best site in the UK. That explains that then.
Can anyone help me with the other dream about hosiery and baby oil?
