Re: Cerne Abbas - a bit rude
Jul 03, 2003, 15:49
Hi Jane,

How are you and yours?

As far as I can gather there's still some scope for a pre-17th Century date for the Giant. He doesn't look very modern to me. The idea that he's there to take the piss out of the Puritans seems a bit tenuous.

Aha! He must have been wearing a pin-stripe suit, because that would camouflage nicely behind wire fencing.

It's all clear to me now.

That's my understanding too K.

It seems pretty much accepted that his nob's got bigger though.

That'll be through friction. Not at all uncommon I believe. Anyone care to do some practical research?

Apparantly it was, "you the viewers". Must have been a telephone thing.

Thanks Vybik, I was afraid nobody was gonna go for that one.... (Has anyone done a 'rise to' gag? I think Jane missed it earlier in her innuendo infested post.)

What, you mean we all (as 'You the viewers') made a phone call we don't remember?

Bugger. I'd have voted for Lullingstone Villa if I'd known. Mind you, if I don't remember it, perhaps I did...

From Britarch
Jul 03, 2003, 16:12
Cerne Abbas was discussed on Britarch a while back.
Martin Brown wrote;
As for Wilmington, on what grounds is our Giant being impugned? Certainly
the first known record is from 1710 but until only five years ago the
earliest source available was from 1780.

I cannot believe that if a Giant had appeared in Dorset in the mid 17th
century we wouldn't have a series of newsbooks with titles like "A wond'rous
tale of Gog - A giant curiously marked" or "Changing Hills: verily we
make-over my Lord Holles's estate". And as far as Cerne Abbas goes, might
not the Puritan theocrats in Dorchester (see Underdown, Fire from Heaven)
have had something to say when a massive piece of porn appeared on the local
pastures.

The earliest reference to Uffington's Horse is only 1586, but current
evidence suggests it is much older. Surely that should give pause for
thought in these matters.

I reckon it was mass hypnosis. Come to think of it, I had a dream that I thought Stonehenge was the very best site in the UK. That explains that then.

Can anyone help me with the other dream about hosiery and baby oil?

Hey that sounds a bit sensible. Stop it.
