It's alright, but no Apocalypto, which I regard as a sort of masterful wordless action ballet. The hokey first half of Hacksaw made Our Town look like...well...Apocalypto, and the war scenes later on were like Rambo 2 crossed with a splattery Italian giallo, when I suspect Gibson was gunning for more of a Come & See sort of vibe. Not too bad, though; I just think Gibson's got a very specific set of talents. He's a man who can bring out the drama in violence, but actual dramatic scenes are strangely flat in his hands. Bit like Eastwood as a director, maybe.

Y'know I have a weird condition. There's a scene early on where the main character's giving blood that I almost fainted watching, while I can sit there and watch heads exploding and limbs being blown off without batting an eye.
