I think it was always his musical tribute to his old friend Pete Burns (subject matter not withstanding). To be honest I didn't notice at the time and thought he was stylistically taking the piss out of Blur's tendencies toward synth-pop new-wave (eg. Girls & Boys). Then I heard You Spin Me Round for the first time in years, probably on TOTP2 and went "aahh, there it is".
