I guess that method is incidental if you have a set budget and you don’t want to go beyond what you’re willing feasibly to spend. :) clearly £250 is this dude’s limit! Even spiking the bid at the 11th hour could result in the other buyer offering a figure much higher than yourself!


That is true. However, I have seen some items go for stupidly high amounts silly because of 2 impatient bidders. Imagine a real auction where it starts at £1, and the first person secretly bids £250, but the second keeps bidding in regular increments, unaware of how high the first one went, and simply just hearing "not high enough" as a response from the auctioneer. So he puts in another crazy high number out of desperation, thinking "surely no one will bid this much" and being surprised when it was barely enough to pass the first bidder.
