The reviewer actually gave them 9 out of 10 - but the editor downgraded it to 8 because the band (who owned their own label) didn't advertise it in the paper.
That might explain why you sometimes see a review that seems to be glowing with praise but, if the mag uses a scoring system, the album gets given a 6/10 or somesuch. Same applies to slag offs that end up with a seemingly reasonable score. Hmmmm
