The Fall - Early Fall 77-79
An old vinyl comp on Step Forward. Fantastic collection which sounds brill on my nice turntable.

I bought a copy of this LP from a second hand place in Hereford many years ago when I was at school. I had got "In Palace Of Swords" by then so expected more of the same. I was very surprised to hear an LP of country and western. I still don't know who is on this LP, but it sure isn't MES! As a further aside, I bought a copy of Live '77 (now deleted I think) a few years aso and it actually does play Early Fall 77-79 instead and I have since heard two further copies the same. Still never heard Live '77!

Eh? You must have a different album to me. This is deffo MES in fine form. Psykick Dancehall, Firey Jack, Dice Man, Bingo Masters Breakout, Rowche Rumble - classics all.

I do, mine is a misspress of something else (C+W) and I still don't know what it actually is - it's pretty terrible from what I remember. I have the Early album on CD (twice if you include the Live '77 one!). It is a classic.

Hah! See what you mean now!

Now that we have the wonders of the internet, perhaps I should try to find out who it is.

:-)

Isn't that the second disc of the last version of Dragnet? Actually I think it might be ten versions of Rowche Rumble.

i like Kalima's records but prefer the Swamp Children as the music (or their earlier stuff) is a bit more different....bit mix of world and avant garde. Kalima was a project for the Ratios to let off a bit of jazz steam but if truth be told, their ability especially 'live' was fairly limited in that area compared to the other british jazzers putting records out at the time...andy sheppard, courtney pine, steve williamson etc.

Think 4 songs is a great record though.

"...and the crap in the air will fuck up your face.....yeah! yeah!... industrial estate!..."

Sheer poetry of the first order ;-)

There are several members here who's musical tastes inform mine very much.
But that's the thing...as you said. This thing with people jumping in and letting you KNOW how much they think YOUR tastes and choices suck....
Gets old hat quick. I don't think i've been guilty of it. But folks doing it to me or others just wrankles me. Not worth it.

It's all down to tone. Of course people are going to disagree about pop music but I can't believe some of the shitstorms and personal attacks that have started on this forum because someone dared to a) state an allegedly uncool musical preference and then b) have the temerity to back it up when they get shot down in flames by some passing hipster who fancies himself or herself as the new Tony Parsons / Julie Burchill of the community. The idea that an art form still in its infancy should have a Gold Standard of taste is ridiculous to start with.

European Classical Music has enshrined (at a guess) about 500 composers of stature in its pantheon from the years between 1100 and 1900. Less than one a year on average though of course more in the 18th and 19th centuries. A genius every two years is still not a bad average when you think about it. Painting and literature probably have a similar pattern.

If in a hundred years time people are still talking about 1% of the hundreds of artists we regularly proclaim as "greats" on here then that will be an extraordinary strike rate. It is far more likely that the popular music that is remembered in 100 or 200 years time for its own merit, rather than passing social / cultural impact, will come from places way off the Unsung map. Especially as rock n roll is such a conservative beast by and large. So we could probably all do with taking it a bit less seriously. Myself included for that matter.

I took Kid C's "crap" comment as affectionate or at least playful and responded in a manner that I believed to be suitably self deprecating while stating a preference. Your post however got pretty much the response it deserved. Goose. Gander.

One of the tracks on Night Time Shadows is a really good rhythmic instrumental, more in the style of ACR/Swamp Children. Really like it - can't remember what it's called though!
