I like the way you can pay out more line if the winds are better higher up. I suppose you'd want to put lights on them to keep low flying aircraft from crashing into them.
Seems they'd be less harmful to migrating birds- less surface area, no large disk of swirling blades.
The cost is less, too... ground prep is minimal... just some sort of anchor and the electrical parts.
Only thing I can see that might be a downside is that weight limitations would seriously limit the size of the alternating generators that are attached to the axle. How heavy would they have to be to produce a significant amount of power to a dwelling?
