I'm not as wary of Obama's religious overtones as I am of Bush's, or to be more precise, Bush's 'Base'.
You can boil down religion in America to two basic camps... the kind that thinks of religion in earth-bound, practical, community terms, and the kind that focuses on the book of Revelations, judgement, punishment, and bizzaro promises of transportation to a sort of urban heaven with gobs of materialist opulence.
There might be some overlap there, but I'm very happy to see that America's three-decade-long (at least) flirtation with 'branding' religion under the exclusive authority of the stridently ignorant xtian right wing is ending.
Perhaps we're returning to religion being more associated with civil rights and antiwar progressives and less with apocalyptic fundamentalists. It's about time. Americas been bullied by those lardheads too long.
