Bit off topic but ... In defence of LA, its as stressful as you make it, like anywhere else. After twelve years here, I find at its worse its pretty nutty and flaky. As for getting away from it all, I know many places in the San Gabriel mountains, less than 45 minutes from my door, which are as untrodden and isolated to get very worried if one had a mishap.
There are times when I wouldn't mind a bit of Maui myself.
