Some of that rings a bell.

Sitting in the car, in the car park of a pub, as a nipper, on the way back from somewhere or other, while ma and pa went in for a "swift half" (probably a couple of pints. Those were different times). The monotony was broken by one or the other of them coming out with a bottle of coke, straw poking from neck, and a packet of crisps.

Sitting in car, a tatty yellow mini van, on hard shoulder of M56, while Dad went traipsing across fields in pissing rain and pitch darkness, fuel can in hand. We rocked in the slipstream of every passing lorry, and the one small interior bulb cast a dismal light on our already dun surroundings. In the distance, a dog howled.

These days, they'd probably be reported to Esther Rantzen.
