Hey Drudes and Drudettes,
I hope you enjoy this ZOOLOGY release, because it was only after a great deal of excavation and sifting that the album was able to come to fruition. In the face of so many re-re-re-issues of the same old pool of material by The Teardrop Explodes, I felt that as there remained a wealth of unreleased tracks that had not ever surfaced for re-appraisal, then the best I could do was dredge the psychedelic canals of the past and see what nuggets still lurked undisturbed beneath those icky waters. Unfortunately for posterity, whole sessions of demos had turned into caked-up mung simply from having been stored only on cheap cassettes all those years ago. Indeed, the further I got into the project the more I worried that ZOOLOGY would remain as a project of my thoughts only. However, friends and cohorts helped me to turn up much stuff that I thought was long lost and even stuff whose provenance I can only guess at. In other cases, I had cleverly converted dubious copies of songs on to a digital format many years ago, only to forget having done so and so even later DATs occasionally yielded excellent renditions of hitherto unreleased tunes. Generally, I have a photographic memory and have learned to return to past events via the same psychic arteries down which I travelled to the present time. But the 200 trips from the early 80s did occasionally conspire to create the psychic equivalent of that clogged artery op ol' Dave Bowie recently underwent, and so the past does occasionally hit a brick wall when memory most needs to serve me well. Nevertheless, I think that ZOOLOGY is an excellent reminder that The Teardrop Explodes was an anachronistic and occasionally wonderful assemblage of schmucks, schmoes and scallywags, whose collective psyche as often as not created a piece of rock'n'roll holler unlike anyone else of the time. U-Know!
