THE FONNI–MAMOIADA RE-ENACTMENT

When, in 1925, D. H. Lawrence requested that his bus driver detour through Fonni so as to experience the festival rites with nearby village rivals Mamoiada, he was told that fighting the previous year had been so fierce that the authorities had banned all meetings between the two villages. Fifty years later, the second annual re-enactment resulted in the kidnapping of Neon Sardinia’s Fabrizio Arra by furious members of F.C. Folgore Mamoiada. The successful re-enactment in 2006 – set up to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Arra’s release – is captured here in full stereo as the mamuthone-headed shamen do battle upon the hillsides of Fonni.

S’AKKABADÒRA-HÈMINA

When Sardinia’s centuries’ long traditions of euthanasia for the old and infirm were stamped out in the 1930s by Mussolini, the practitioners of these ancient arts gradually became like ghosts upon their own village streets. Stripped of their powers, the ‘Birch Bark Women’ (S’Akkabadòra-Hèmina) were, however, still venerated by their local communities until the last one died in Zinnigas in the early 1990s. Performed upon the hillside at the temple of Montessu, Neon Sardinia’s Fabrizio Arra and Arturo Vaca recall herein many of the original calls and responses, themes and melodies of the ‘Birch Bark Women’ themselves. New synthesizers for the old ceremonies, indeed.

‘A total skullfuck of a book, a hooligan saga of rave damaged psychic shipwrecks and mythic time travel.’ BOBBY GILLESPIE
‘One of the most brilliant, serious, funny, life-crammed novels any reader is likely to lay their mitts on.’ THE GUARDIAN
‘The debut novel from the great cosmic intellect that is Julian Cope is as unique and fearless as the man himself.’ NICKY WIRE
