Hawkwind's Space Ritual in Dolby Surround
Oct 25, 2021, 01:40
Space Ritual is my all-time favourite recording, over the years I’ve bought every version of it, multiple times: vinyl, CD, remasters, and in the search for audio perfection I’ve just bought myself a new set of Sennheiser headphones and Dragonfly DAC, and it’s improved the listening experience far beyond my expectations, Lemmy’s bass never sounded so good, and there is far more instrument separation, and it’s now clear who is playing what and when.
And because I reckoned that the 2007 remasters would probably be the last reworking of this classic album, I thought I would see what the DVD Dolby versions had to offer when wearing these same headphones.
So, I’ve just converted the Space Ritual DVD to MP4 versions using the Handbake App on a mac, once with Dolby AC3 5.1 passthrough and again with Dolby DTS 5.1 passthrough and then loaded the resulting videos onto my iPhone.
The videos sound far better than I thought they would, maybe it’s my imagination, but it seems a far more immersive listening experience, with the sound being wider and deeper - much better than listening to it on my cinema surround system.
I’m using the VLC App to play them, but the version I put into the AppleTV App seems ever-so-slightly better still.
Naturally I’m now asking myself whether there’s the likelihood of there ever being a Dolby Atmos version of this to listen to using Apple Spatial Surround, because I can imagine that being an absolutely awesome listening experience.
Has anyone done the same?
And does anyone know if such plans exist, to create a Dolby Atmos version of Space Ritual?
Because if it’s technically possible, it seems odd that there wouldn’t be one, because to my knowledge, this album has been available continuously for almost 50 years.
