I was sad to read that Alabama singer/guitarist Dan Sartain died last month. I saw him live in Manchester about 15 years ago when my eldest son's band of the time played on the same bill at the Club Academy. Dan played a solo set, armed just with an electric guitar and he cut a really cool figure, with his greased back hair. He was a neat guitarist too. I remember that he broke a string at one point and as he didn't have any road crew he asked if anyone in the audience knew how to put a string on. He handed it a lad in the crowd and picked up another guitar and got on with the next number. As soon as he finished it he asked the audience member if he had finished restringing. He hadn't. He hadn't done it at all, freezing in the spotlight. So he handed to another member of the audience who was more successful. 'Thank you', he said with a smile. 'You saved the day'. I think he gave him something, too. Dan never made the big time but he was talented, funny and charismatic. RIP x
