Records of the Year (2020)

I don't think anyone has done this, have they?

Anyway, here's mine...

1. Erratics & Uncomformities – Craven Faults
Probably my fave act to emerge in the past few years. If you are in the mood for long, doomy electronic instrumentals then you may wish to check this out.

2. Self Civil War – Julian Cope
A 'proper' song based Cope album which finds our Jules on great form. Some future classics here.

3. Mind Hive – Wire
Although Wire appear to have lost their long-held ability to surprise (though, to be fair, I wasn't expecting an intro to sound like Fade To Grey!), I think this is my favourite of theirs for a while. Hung is a total Wire classic.

4. Semi-Legal On The Edge Of Culture – Dope
Julian again but this time with long predominantly instrumental numbers with a a reggae influence at times.

5. A Few Scattered Hours – Memory Drawings
Are you a fan of Leeds band, Hood*, but thought they would benefit from featuring a Minneapolis-raised, Morocco-based hammered-dulcimer player? Well, it's your lucky day! (*One of Hood is involved)

6. Walls Have Ears – Transglobal Underground
First TGU album in a while I think. Some really great numbers here, not least Chant Sans Addresse which is one of the best things I heard all year.

7. Hotspot – Pet Shop Boys
I love most of this – there are some great dance numbers – though the last track gets on my nerves and I tend to give it a miss!

8. I Grow Tired But Dare Not Fall Asleep - Ghostpoet
A pretty intense one. Quite Tricky-ish though oddly enough I actually prefer it to Tricky's latest thus far.

9. Glassforms – Bruce Brubaker / Max Cooper
“It’s based on music by Philip Glass, but it is a re-invigoration, recontextualization, post-modernization. It’s not a remix, it’s a new set of clothes!” says Brubaker. Moments of beauty mix in a socially distant kind of way with some less comfortable moments.

10. Shadow Of Fear - Cabaret Voltaire
There's no Stephen Mallinder but don't let that put you off.
