Pete Paphides' autobiography
Apr 20, 2020, 18:37
A really nice reference to firstly The Teardrop Explodes and then Julian Cope in @PetePahides autobiography “Broken Greek - a study of chip shops and pop songs”. Based upon his early years in 1970/80s Birmingham and his passion for pop music before he eventually went on to become a music journalist.

From about page 317 onwards… “January had only just ended but it was clear that no one was going to come up with a better opening line in 1981 then ‘bless my cotton socks I am in the news’.… And it was all because of Julian. Julian Cope looking you in the eye and saying “come on. Are you with me?. Are we gonna do it or what? ALL RIGHT!!!”

In fact I recommend the whole book. It is beautifully written and with some very funny passages that microscopically investigate his experiences as a Greek boy growing up in the Midlands. “Unflinching and heartwarming” is one of the reviews, and I think that’s about right.
