Idles - Brutalism. A few times actually. Bedding in nicely to my collection

American Beauty - Music from the original soundtrack, and not the soundtrack itself which is what I wanted! My own stupid fault I guess. Anyway there's still a couple of Thomas Newman tracks on it.

Tears for Fears - Music from the Big Chair

The Groundhogs - Split and Thank christ for the Bomb. Not particularly fussed by either of them really. Not for me.

Brian Eno - Ambient 1 and 2, Here Come the Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain and Another Green World. Eno's debut album sounding particularly creative this time round. Watched the 74 doc by Alfons Sinniger about its making which tied in nicely.

Faust - Faust, So Far, IV and C'est com com complique. Really dig all Faust I've heard but particularly taken with CCCC this time round. Amazing improv/jam feel to it all.

Follakzoid - III. Got to be influenced by Trad Gras Och stenar.

Fields of the Nephilim - Elizium

Miles Davis - Pangaea

Some Home Normal releases:

Ian Hawgood and Danny Norbury - Faintly Recollected
Ian Hwagood and Giulio Aldinucci - Consequence Shadows

Two great January releases on Home Normal - of the two I prefer Faintly Recollected. In terms of atmosphere reminds me of one of my favourite releases last year - Elodie's Vieux Silence.

They were my first Home Normal purchases so was checking out other artists on the label's Bandcamp site - they are currently selling off a couple of Jason Van Wyk albums for £2 - Opacity and Attachment - so couldn't resist. Both are beautiful - he is a pianist who adds atmosphere with electronics etc. Lovely melancholic instrumental tunes.

Urthona - Destruction Rules. New Urthona ordered on bandcamp. Not got the cd yet but listened to the Bandcamp download. Heavier and more ambienter than ever, with some Popul Vuh-ian flute on the final track.

Also digging the Urthona 'remix' of Slomo's Superindividuals on Collective Ritual which also includes versions by Teeth of the Sea, Gnod and Teleplasmiste amongst others. A great idea, interesting versions but not as good as Transits! Nice biographies of the artists and labels involved in the liner notes, which made me check out my House of Mythology releases:

Teleplasmiste - Frequency is the New Ecstasy
Zu - Jhator. This gets better on each listen. Definitely a highlight of last year. Two side long tracks in multiple movements with interesting instrumentation. Just noticed today the tuba drone underpinning the beautiful violin and cello towards the end of the album.

Two excellent January vinyl releases:

Aidan Baker and Gareth Davies - Invisible Cities. Lovely ambient drone record featuring Davies' bass clarinet.

Zenjungle - Fragmented Lives. A Greek saxophonist with a 30+ minute piece of I guess drone - but the instrumentation with sax and violin lifts it above drone per se.

Rafael Anton Irissarri - The Shameless Years. I missed out on the hardcopy of this last year (seems to be sold out everywhere) but decided to purchase the download as it was mentioned in similar terms to Zenjungle - artist's response to political upheavals. Fantastic melancholic drone, the highlight for me the two collaborations with the Iranian Siavash Amini (as a direct critique of Trump's travel ban on Iranian nationals). It turns out Amini has also recorded with Zenjungle.

From the archives:

Scanner - The Great Crater. Listened to this today after seeing him perform an excellent electronic set at the wonderful IKLEKTIC nestled improbably between Lambeth Palace, Westminster and Waterloo.

And as I type listening to the Popul Vuh like modern composition of Haruka Nakamura's Piano Ensemble from last year.
