That makes me sad, even in an era when musical heroes seem to be dropping like flies. No-one can claim that the Smithereens ever changed the course of rock n' roll, but Green Thoughts and Especially For You are two albums I've repeatedly gone back to over the last thirty years. Comfort music.

Yeah, they were one of the best bands late-80s heading into the 90s and more-or-less shaped alternative music as we know it today, really... Stuff like "Drown in My Own Tears" and "Only a Memory" is just great rock songwriting period.

I saw them at The Channel in Boston mid 80's and very good they were too. I did get a chance to meet them backstage at The Channel but none of them could understand my Scottish accent and the noise was too loud. I just helped myself to the Michelob. I never could work out what was happening with Paul's hair.
Tell you the truth, I never really thought about them again. Some of the "Green" era REM reminded me a bit of them a few years later.

This track was never off theWBCN airwaves during 1986. Peeled back the years listening to it again tonight.
