Decent set of electronic instrumentals, if less essential than the set he did with Vince Clark a couple of years before.

He did an EP years ago called 'Counterfeit' that I remember enjoying, esp his cover of Motherless Child.

Do love that VCMG album 'Sssssss', some great noises, and it funks all over the gaff.

There's some great covers on Counterfeit. I especially like "Compulsion" and "Manner of Speaking". Plus nice to see Vini Reilly get some recognition. There was a second Counterfeit album in the 2000s.

Apollo 440 - Electo glide in blue. Was so perturbed about an errant CD case not doing its job properly that I don't remember the music on the album now!

Oh man, the Billy Mackenzie vocal performance on Pain In Any Language is heart-stoppingly brilliant.

PS I love Gargoyle but I loved the last couple too

What do you think about the latest incarnation? Heard their Marc Riley session a few weeks back and will have to check out the album.

Bit of self mocking really! The album is strong as is the BM track - just remember being really annoyed that I couldn't even open the CD case for about 5 minutes!

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Polygondwanaland. I’ve been pretty sniffy about these guys in the past, but they’ve made this, their latest album, available as a free download, and the lead track is pretty marvellous, so rude not to… https://kinggizzard.bandcamp.com/album/polygondwanaland

James Holden & The Animal Spirits – s/t. Still trending ;-) (BOC fans, you need to listen to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58y6Kdv9ZV4)

La Feline – Triomphe. As is this. Track I haven’t been able to remove from my head, magical stuff: https://lafeline.bandcamp.com/track/la-mer-aval-e

Vuetveteloca – Sonora. Hi-energy stoner/space rock from Chile, recommended: https://soundcloud.com/fuzz-club/sets/vuelveteloca-sonora

Stray – Mudanzas / Move It. So, Mudanzas is album number four, where they get a load of horns and an orchestra in. When it’s good, it’s bloody good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXBz6Pc7uD4 Move It is where they do a decent job of turning Cliff Richard’s first single into a slightly sinister chugger, but overall there’s more filler than usual.

Killing Joke – s/t. Err, don’t think I’d heard this before! It’s actually a lot more polished than I expected, but clearly massively influential… To these ears, ‘Requiem’ sounds like a tougher, more nihilistic version of Hawkwind circa ‘77/78, but then everything sounds like HW to me… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7WPI4TJImo

Listen With Father…

Highlights on the educational jukebox this week included: the Sab’s wonderful (though usually overlooked) other single from the 70s ‘Never Say Die’; the Maiden’s fist-pumping, TOTP-appearing classic ‘Running Free’; and the Rex’s ‘Children Of The Revolution’, cos the girls once sang it in a school assembly…

U is for…

Up-Tight – Five Psychedelic Pieces. I have a feeling that this was a Cope recommendation from this very site. Had no recollection of it other than that. These guys are Japanese, so the title should actually be Five Psychedelic Pieces Played Live In The Basement Of Hell. Not unlistenable, and quite engaging in parts, but overall, never destined to set the world on fire. This is pretty nice though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsKUAvVdvIA

Film:

Tangerine Dream – Revolution Of Sound. Rather wonderful documentary that traces the history of Edgar Froese and his merry men as they create a new type of music. Extensive voiceover from Froese himself, sounding not unlike Werner Hertzog. Some awesome archival footage too. Due to be released on DVD soon I think, seek it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3vypKJab4U

The Wild River – The Blow Monkeys
Fifth studio album since the Blow Monkeys re-convened some 10 yrs ago, albeit this one features a new drummer. To be honest their post-reformation material is closer to Dr Robert's more earnest solo career than the band's 80's glossy pop (or their more abstract – and under-rated – debut, Limping For A Generation), which I have mixed feelings about. That said this one has some really good tunes on it and might just be their best since they got back together.

Carry Fire - Robert Plant
I went to see him last week. I enjoyed it but was slightly disappointed if I'm honest. It got a bit too jiggy for me at times. Following a solo slot, the support act Seth Lakeman joined the band for much of the set, bringing with him his violin and over-whelming air of smugness, but thankfully not his songs. This album sounds ok on early listens.

S/T – The Stooges
Funhouse – The Stooges
The Idiot – Iggy Pop
Lust For Life – Iggy Pop
I'm reading the Open Up & Bleed biog so I've been having a bit of an Iggyfest. So many great tracks on these albums, with Dirt and Sister Midnight really hitting the spot this week.

Remix EP- Tarwater
The Needle Was Travelling – Tarwater
Dwellers on The Threshold – Tarwater
Spider Smile – Tarwater
After a self-inflicted Tarwwater amnesty, I took them back with a vengeance. One of my fave ever bands now TBH.

Well, the band is down to just one guy now, Angus.
I gotta say, I really like the new album. Certainly a lot more than the previous two dance oriented records Mess and WIXIW. Sisterworld still takes some beating as a Liars high point in my book, that was another I mainlined till I couldn't anymore. Proud Evolution is still one of my fav' Liars trax ever though.

I did not know there was a second Counterfeit, cheers fer the heads up. I will have to chase that down and have a listen. I do quite like his voice, and only recently realised that half the tracks I thought were Gahan singing turn out to be Gore.
