Ha, this is a long running argument which was indeed further exacerbated by the aforementioned Zowie (whom most assumed to be the same as the Mothers' Wowie Zowie), however Bowie has insisted it was to be pronounced as in 'Zoe'. I think Zowie himself pronounces it 'Duncan' :-).
