I've bought records in every shop mentioned so far. My memory of Calers is a bit hazy but I can remember that it was an amazing record shop with loads of indie 45s that no one else seemed to be stocking. I recall buying early 80s singles by The Church here on import and some obscure neo garage discs by The Chesterfield Kings and The Lyres. People from the North East will remember Pet Sounds in the glory days of vinyl. The owner was a huge Beach Boys fan and put on the once GREAT Newcastle Record Fairs that have since turned out unessential.

The secondhand vinyl place up near the Haymarket was quite good back then too, can't remember what that was called though.

I got 'Rotters' Club' there, and the post-pubescent hots for a sales assistant called Mandy. Bought my first ever album there aged 4! http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2479/3829073489_21e688cfbe.jpg you weren't at Redwell school by any chance?

Would that be Old Hitz by any chance, next door to Timeslip (the comic shop) in the prefabs. Joolio

No, Harton - when it was an all boys' school :-( Hence my pubescent desires for Mandy and her physical graffiti... That Haymarket shop to which you refer was Oldhitz, by the way. It still exists, but is now on Neville Street.

I'd always head there after Pet Sounds, then over to the Arcade for badges and patches.

Not visited Newcastle town centre for years, probably wouldn't recognise half of it now, good to know Oldhitz is still on the go.

Fitter Stoke wrote: Unfortunately my copy was warped so I had to take it back. (I ended up buying it from Image in South Shields instead - where I also bought 'Faust IV'.) was Image the one at the bottom of Fowlers street near the pork shop that used to sell saveloy's on the site of what's now the Denmark Centre? Spent a few bob in there as a kid too, saveloy's and Black Sabbath albums. I can remember a good second hand vinyl place opening up around about 83/84 on the way out to Commercial Road on the other side of the town centre, ran by a big tall fella with long curly hair. That was always worth a visit if I couldn't be bothered trapesing across to Newcastle.

Have come to this thread a bit late, but thought I'd share a few memories .. Oldhitz - next door to Timeslip, has changed locations several times (at one point was in the Newgate Shopping Centre), still going. Will always remember going in and asking them if they had a copy of Trout Mask Replica only to be told that "the bloke for Sonic Youth bought our last copy". RPM - good shop, excellent vinyl selection - lots of rarities/obscure stuff. Bought my copy of Cardiacs' Heaven Born and Ever Bright on vinyl there. Volume - a Newcastle (and Sunderland) institution. Record label as well - they put out a lot of Toy Dolls stuff. The Newcastle shop had the best selection of US hardcore/punk I've ever seen. I think Volume singlehandedly kept Geordie punks stocked with US hardcore. Also had the biggest selection of Residents vinyl ever. Pet Sounds - remember seeing the owner in pubs around Monkseaton before going to gigs at the Whitley Bay Ice Rink. Great second hand store and pretty cheap, as well. Three shops - main one in Eldon Gardens, the others near the railway station and Civic Centre respectively. Kard Bar - essential for when you wanted to buy a fading 1974 poster of Nazareth. Steel Wheels - one of the great survivors. Still going strong the last time I checked (November 2009). Windows - pretty good record selection in amongst all the instruments and hi-fi kit. Bought Nine Inch Nails 10 inch of Head Like a Hole there after being blown away by the band at the Rivberside. Virgin - Eldon Square. Painfully trendy. Various record shops in Wallsend and South Gosforth, the names of which escape me now. Record fairs - at that hall in Ellison Place. Bootlegs galore. Glad that's off my chest.

Steel Wheels has gone now, I think someone from there may be doing Beatdown intead ref NIN was that the show where they spent the night throwing water at each other, with Hole as support, blew me away as well if it was, had a real edge to it
