Styx was extremely prog in the early days -- first LP was 1972, didn't have a hit until 1975 and peaked in popularity around 1981.

Sort of like suburban boogie rock with the artistic aspirations of Yes or Genesis -- not much to do with metal, though they had a pair of hotshot guitar players.

"Blitzkrieg" by Blitzkrieg is one of my fave tracks. (Even if the riff does sound suspiciously like "Hocus Pocus" by Focus!)

"Lightning to the Nations" by Diamond Head seems like the holy grail of that particular movement -- huuuuuge influence on Metallica in particular.

A very good book on the the development of various metal styles is "Sound of the Beast" by Ian Christe.

Indeed, see also Aragorn's "Black Ice" single. Often quoted as the record that got Martin Ain/Tom Warrior from Celtic Frost into metal.

Ahh, but Budgie did have a "NWOBHM phase"!

"Power Supply" and the "Do Not Induce Vomitting" EP -- these sound nothing like their early "classic metal" albums!

Yeah, I've heard that said before, but I thought they still sounded like Budgie! ;^)

But they'd been around for years. They weren't NWOBHM any more than Raw Power was New Wave.

The very use of the word 'new' disqualifies them, no matter what they sounded like. If someone had said at the time that Budgie were NWOBHM they'd have been laughed at. End of story!

(Not that I care btw!!)

FWIW, i seem to remember enjoying Diamond Head's romantic classic Sucking My Love back in the day. Er, and that's about it really.
