Reagrding U2's success and other band's lack, one thing to consider is U2 established early on that all songwriting credits/monies would be shared equally amongst all four. This is powerfully unifying, quite an incentive to drummer and bassist who usually are not included.
The Doors also shared monies. Both these bands toured relentlessly to establish success within 2-3 years of arrival.
Many bands did not share monies and enjoyed succes, but had break ups or personnel turnovers.
I think in bands with serious chops there is not always the incentive to share for ego's sake, where as a band where everyone begins humbly it is easier to share.
