Now that IS a band with no songs to speak of.

It bugs me when Van Halen and Kiss get lumped in with the likes of Poison and the Crue. It's like putting Wire in the same bracket as Slaughter and the Dogs or The Lurkers. Or blaming The Sisters for The Mish and The Nephs.

Van Halen cooked their critical goose with the 1984 tour as it was total crap - not least because they couldn't stand being on stage together at the same time - but when they were starting out they were on a par with The Who. Seriously.

I had Slayed and the red live album on cassette when I was a kid but they never really did it for me and once I heard Piledriver it was all over for me. For Brit boogie the early Vertigo Quo albums are hard to beat.

And bringing it full circle Piledriver was my introduction to The Doors via Francis Rossi's well disguised love of Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Blake .....

.... acutally it was their cover of Roadhouse Blues

Cool debate and stuff. I think it's ironic that we are now in a time where, for the last few years, we have been sold a glut of supposedly 'authentic' singer/songwriters - yer Blunts, Meluas etc - culminating in the Brit school acoustic soul of Adele and Duffy (who apparently had a goth rock past she's quiet about) and these hyper-marketed and groomed troubadours are apparently 'real', a case of the deliberate lack of style triumphing over genuine substance I think.

It amazes me that this sort of thing is still percieved as some apogee of authenticity 'cos someone's standing there singing about having no girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other with an acoustic guitar, whereas a bloke that spray paints his face, calls himself "Orgkar The Hellfish" and sings about slaying orcs is somehow not 'meaning' it and isn't 'real'. Personally, I'm with "Orkgar" cos anyone can stand there with a guitar and a jumper and jeans and moan a bit, - it takes balls of steel (His new album by the way) to be that daft and probably really mean it far more than any troubled troubadour or post-punk Ian Curtis wannabe.

I remember that old quote from Dave Lee Roth "The reason music critics love Elvis Costello is 'cos most of them look like him".

Happily.

I happen to like all those bands. However, I don't regard them as being as more 'real' or otherwise as certain other artists because I believe that the very notion of 'realness' and 'authenticity' in rock is pretty spurious anyway.

And I certainly don't see how The Stones continual dollar gobbling mega-outings wheeling out "Satisfaction" for about the 5 squillionth time are any more 'real' than when KISS do tours and at least have the decency to blow more things up.

Ah Mooncat you are the son / father / brother I never had ...

Authenticty is a total dead-end street and at the end of that street lives Mojo Man in mortal fear of a knock on the door from the discography police. Rock and roll either gets you off or it doesn't and I am not sure I much care how grim, poor, obscure, overlooked, suicidal, toothless, gnarly, bonkers or downright deceased the artist is. The fact that a lot of wonderful and undersold artists have to snuff it in order to get their fifteen minutes in the sun is the ultimate irony of Mojo World. It so much easier to catalogue and weigh the merits of an artist when they are done with recording, performing and er .... breathing.

As for the Kiss / Jimbo / Van Halen thing I am sure quite as soon as DLR is dead he will be declared a genius - the Cab Calloway of metal blah blah. Whereas Ace, Gene and Paul will no doubt be hoisted onto the shoulders of the critics the world over and paraded through town as Godfathers of Punk of some such nonsense. Vince Neill probably not so much .....

BTW does Orgkar The Hellfish have an album out? I have room in my collection for maybe one more record and this sounds like a keeper ...

heh. the Ramones were even more comic book than Kiss in some respects. a lot of great music comes from the "fake" theatrical aspect, particularly live.

Totally. I mean for how long can you stand there going "onetwothreefour" and "gabba gabba hey" EVERY NIGHT for decades before it becomes part of the act? Doesn't make it any less enjoyable.

Haha - spot on.

There's something so horrible about a skinny good looking bloke singing about his girlfriend while playing a guitar - oh do fuck off. If they really mean it it's even worse. How can anything be more self-indulgent than that?
