Re: Roger Dean, ABWH, suckathon 89
May 09, 2005, 17:25
in 1989, Anderson bruford wakeman howe released an eponymous cd housed in a Roger Dean-designed cover.

there is one track where they simulate a Brazilian carnival, with fake synth trumpets, and John anderson screams 'rrrrrico!". twats.

that is a terrible, terrible album. I would agree that all that 80s prog sucks. I would also say that Swedish 90s prog sucks. On top of which, Spock's beard suck pretty hard too.

When you get right down to it, any prog album made after 1979 is guilty until proven innocent. and even then, beware.

I would express admiration for the following -

King Crimson (1st two albums + Larks, Starless and Bible Black)
Van Der Graaf Generator (every track on every album is good)
Genesis (beginning till Gabriel's exit).
Gentle Giant (71 - 75)
Yes (yes album, close to the edge, tales)
ELP (tarkus, trilogy)

a note on tales from topographic oceans -

I think I like it because it is so absurd and ridiculously overblown. to me, the lynch pin is the dementia inherent in Jon's sleeve note, where he's "leafing through Paramahansa's autobiography of a yeti" or some nonsense, while eating room service in an atlanta georgia luxury hotel. Then he describes having sessions by candle light with Steve Howe, and one reads this thing with a fair sense that the author may well be several bars short of an intermezzo.

P.S. - Tormato sucks. Circus of Heaven? Mistah Kurtz, he dead!
