Why do you care so much about the Mercury prize anyway? Let's face it, no-one gives a toss about it and will have forgotten about it in a week's time, and winning it would probably kill off any cred Skinner has with his younger fans anyway. By the way, you called the Basement Jaxx album Brixton shit, but The Streets album's Brixton shit too, ain't it? Oh right, I see, you meant 'shit' as in 'not good', not 'shit' as in, 'THE shit'. Heheh.

I'm not a Janis Joplin fan, but I hear her influence in singers I do like, such as Robert Plant. Whereas Cher hasn't influenced anybody I like.

Sometimes I wonder if Simon the Evil Puppetmaster's influence may be more wide-ranging than we're aware of. If it's true, it would explain why the awfulness of modern music is spread across every genre.

IMO, the Joss Stones and Christina Aguileras are even worse than the Britney Spearses, because unlike the Britneys, they can sing, but they're given license to over-emote pointlessly in a way that makes me cringe.

I'm more into Big Brother and the Holding Company as a band more than Janis. But sometimes Janis really can sing when she's not doing her usual histrionics...

Oh and "Gypsies Tramps and Theives" was OK -- I could give or take the other solo Cher stuff...

There's definitely been enough of that on the radio these days... They seem to take a simple song and turn it into gruelling Sysiphus agony.
