I just remembered... Didn't the Virgin Prunes do a messed-up version of a Barry Manelow song or something?

16HP also do great covers of Gun Club's Fire Spirit and Joy Divsions 24 Hours (and one other JD song, that I can't recall at the moment..head full of blech and sniff)

That would be 'Day of the Lords" on the 'Hoarse' CD.

I have always really like this version I guess I knew it 1st before the original. They replaced the cyclical piano thing for a atmospheric synth backdrop and song suits Sylvians detached B.Ferry stylings. They did over covers less well like 2nd that emotion and aint that peculiar But this worked precisely because it was very different from the original and I reckon thats the way it should be since if you all going to cover something you might as well make it your own - or whats the point?

Taht Giant Sand album I never really dug. I really prefer them doing their own material than some sort of ironic attempt at Black Sabbath

XTC's take on 'All Along The Watchtower' takes some beating. And don't forget Joe Cocker's version of 'With A Little Help From My Friends' which turns a jaunty pop ditty into a hyper-soul-meets-hard-rock waltz - a brave (and rightly successful) cover indeed.

Not as strange as The Residents' version, though!
