Re: Lummox?

Lummox is defined in Scottish dictionarys as a Scots word - a local anarchist punk band go by that name. My cockney brother in law says hes mum always called him buggerlugs too. All my culture seems fraudulent.
I really hope 'numpty' is Scottish.

Numpty

You might be interested to know that "numpty" is one of the words currently being officially considered for the OED. It will be defined as: " (noun: stupid person)".

The etymology dictionary is unclear about it's origins, but suggests "probably of Scottish origin".

Numpty is often used in the NorthWest (Oldham esp.) to denote a kind of local scally type, a bit short on the gray matter type of thing
Lummox. Didn't know that was Scottish cos it always used to turn up in the American comics i.e in the Fantastic Four the Human Torch would yell at the Thing "Hey, get outta the way ya big lummox!"

Interesting!

Ummm... lummox isn't Scottish - leastways not according to what i've read. Most likely East Anglian apparently.

Wow...it's a blast though to think that some of my early Marvel Comic loves were quoting an old East Anglian dialect.
Lummox used to appear loads of times in marvel comics
Hawkeye to Captain America "Geez Cap, Goliath as Avengers Chairman? He's such a big lummox"

and the perenial size/movement scenario
say for example Daredevil vs Mr Hyde "Gotta dodge his sledgehammer blows! How can such a big lummox move so fast?!"

Well the F word,( I'm all coy all of a sudden) a guid viking word, entered English through Scots, and lummox may have spread in a similar fashion.
I'll happy with numpty though.

My first job in the Netherlands, i had to teach the Slough Hindis how to talk in Scots so that we could confuse the Dutch the same way they could confuse us.
