I've dabbled in home cultivation myself in the past, and whilst it's true that you don't need anything in the region of 5000 watts to supply yourself, the combination of a mercury lamp and a timer do use an awful lot of electricity. My bill jumped by almost doublefold after three months of doing that, so I decided to pack it in - partly for ecological reaosn, and partly because I didn't want our electricity supplier to get suspicious (as I do know of people who've been caught that way).
Mind you, that was more than 10 years ago, and I dare say home growing equipment has come on by some distance in the interim.
