No doubt in my mind that increased access would result in increased damage. Repairs would never keep up with demand.

Cheers. Also, by the time they'd finished reading it they'd be too tired to climb!

How about a wooden staircase being errected up the hill with a viewing platform on top? I know this would cause damage where the supports are inserted but at least there would be no excuse to walk on the 'hill' itself. Obviously this only applies to those who ignore the signs not to walk on the 'hill' in the first place!

A far less intrusive option would be a lift up the centre of it. A massive opportunity was missed when the old shafts caved in! So: a lift up the middle, and astroturf. Those are MY ideas, so if anybody uses them I want a cut of it! And a cafe up the top. Hang on - how about a funicular railway? G x

A gibbet on top would be nice. With trespassers hanging from it. Like in the old days.

Obviously this only applies to those who ignore the signs not to walk on the 'hill' in the first place! There’s a wooden staircase on one of the Bartlow Burial mounds (second pic down here). Believe me, it doesn’t look good. That, and a viewing platform on Silbury, would really mess with the aesthetics of Silbury when seen from a distance, at different times and in different lights. Think the best suggestions so far have been a perimeter path at the base of Silbury, along with more and seriously better signage. Won’t stop the trespassing completely but it should reduce the numbers of people doing it and, as with seatbelts etc, may eventually become the norm.

I've already claimed the cental lift idea and I'm having an ice-cream stand on the top. I will of course be selling giant CONES, white, with a green sprinkle over it and the path made of chocolate buttons :-) What other stands/stalls should we have?

So simple, but very effective. It strikes an important psychological balance. By being 'allowed' to be so close to the monument, I think a persons respect for it will automatically increase. It is no longer a distant thing, unable to be engaged with.

Next step is getting the beaurocrats at English Heritage to get off their butts and do it – open letters here and elsewhere maybe.

Are we talking about a perimeter path above the ditch and within touching distance of the hill or one set back further? Silbury needs to be viewed from further back I would have thought.
