Shaun the Sheep Movie. Best silent movie evah.... Seems to have more going for it than The Artist and that won best picture a few years back. Amusing, poignant and actually quite real - honest.

Ready Player One. A lot to enjoy in this film. Not sure if I particularly appreciated the ending with its preachy overtones of ... not sure if this is exactly a spoiler, but I'll put one up anyway * Spoiler Alert*... playing games is fine but you should concentrate on reality, because wait for it, reality is real. How very insightful. I accept the message superficially when applying to things like social media, but reality is very much up for grabs and I enjoy films that actually explore this issue - what it is to be human when related to AI too. There's none of that in this film.

Did enjoy the storytelling though which Spielberg excels at.

3 billboards outside ebbing missouri...trendy but cracking. I tell you what id underestimated Sam Rockwell.

He was fabulous in it. Great film and I was expecting Frances McDormand to be wonderful (she always is!) but I didn't really know Rockwell so his performance was a great surprise.

Not long after he (and fellow Ebbing actor Woody Harrelson) popped up in a film I was watching on the telly - Seven Psychopaths which was admittedly flawed but hugely enjoyable with another good performance from Rockwell (looking not unlike a young Peter Richardson of Comic Strip fame). Great dialogue that actually had me laughing out loud a couple of times.

Sam Rockwell is great - very charismatic. If he is in a film, then I tend to seek it out.

Other films I can recommend are

The Way Way Back

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

Lawn Dogs

Heck, I didn't even mind Choke and The Green Mile

American Ultra - nicely balanced mix of slacker comedy meets action movie. Sort-of a cross between American tv series Chuck (but with a movie level of violence) and a bit-less-full-on-than-Kevin-Smith-ish level of comedy.

Jessie Eisenberg plays a dope-addled and panic-striken convenience store clerk who is unwittingly a C.I.A. sleeper agent. When a C.I.A. boss decides to 'clear the portfolio' the overseer of the project (that Jessie's characters' training was a part of) decides to activate him in order to give him a fighting chance of survival. Also features Walton Goggins.

Also highly recommended, but with less mass-appeal, Jessie Eisenberg (again) in The Double. Loosely based on the Dostoyevsky story. Has something in common with Eraserhead in its' alienation vibe, but is actually a darkish comedy (with Kaurismaki-style absurdist elements) ... a lot of laughs if you're that way inclined. The highly film-literate Richard Ayoade's second feature. Even includes a brief cameo from J. Mascis.

Enjoyed The Double in the main, although I did find it unsettling. As dark as the story is, the end is somewhat different to the book, but no worse off for it IMO. Was a bit obsessed with Dostoevsky as a student some 20 years ago. I seem to remember a BBC version of Crime and Punishment with John Sim and Ian Mcdiarmid at the turn of the century that I wouldn't mind revisiting.

Les Combattants. 2 post school age younguns strike up a relationship whilst going on army training courses and playing at Ray Mears. Quite liked it actually

Idiocracy. Didn't make it to the end - although the idea has some potential. We're run by idiots, all gone to the dogs, continual dumbing down etc. Just delivered in quite a mediocre fashion with little imagination

It only occured to me in the shower last week that the Hoover Dam being named after J. Edgar Hoover makes the J.E.Hoover Dam a False God Dam.

Uh huh her.

Mike Judge's conceptual continuity there.
