Has anyone listened to this album? I've listened to their other pre-1975 albums released around then, and they are excellent. I love their unique sound of eccentric psychedelia during the golden age of the Japanese Underground. I could never find an affordable copy of this album, even when there is a 1971 vinyl, a 1979 vinyl re-issue and a 1997 CD re-issue. EDIT: I have obtained The Golden Bat, so I can invite you to SoItGo.es if you share any of the following ltd bonus discs from J.A. Seazer CDs: Tenjo Sajiki Music Work Collection Vol 2 / 3 / 4 / Throw Away Your Books (instrumental version) / Recital from the Wilderness / Barbara Dwarven Star Apocalypse / Lemmings. I'm not interested in the 1977 Golden Bat (the version where the second song is 'Hi-Hi-Hi'). It's a decent album however I've listened to it and own a copy. This and the original have entirely different track-lists.

I'm a big fan of early TKB and enjoy very much the recent cd releases of "Returning Golden Bat", "Story of Eight Dogs" & "The Moon is East the Sun is West" but I'm still not sure if I've ever listened to the 1971 Golden Bat on Polydor as I think various of the sites purporting to have it for download seem to actually be a later recorded version from 1977. I did have someone send me a CDr he said was the original 1971 version but it sounded very much like later TKB and not very good. I recently discovered this amazing site http://catalog.lamama.org/index.php/Detail/Entity/Show/entity_id/2871# which has loads of information about Tokyo Kid Brothers - click on the small photos and then *click again* on the enlarged photo and lots more will appear. It seems they toured far more extensively outside of Japan then I'd thought.

I just read through quite a bit of the TKB documentation on that La Mama link i posted previously and it seems audio recordings were made of live performances of "Golden Bat" and "Coney Island Play" in 1970 and there is a video recording of a Golden Bat performance. Maybe still held in the library of the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts - 111 Amsterdam Avenue, Manhatten if anyone fancies a visit to find out? http://www.lincolncenter.org/organization/new-york-public-library-for-the-performing-arts

Thanks for the research, I haven't found this website before, and it has a lot of interesting info. It's a shame I live nowhere near Manhattan (or the U.S). The second track '?????' is featured as a bonus track on the CD remaster of Returning Golden Bat. Track 17 of this may be from the 1971 The Golden Bat, as it's not on the 1977 version -> http://www.xiami.com/album/jK2uAm401e5?spm=0.0.0.0.nCdhbP The TKB also played part of The Golden Bat on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1970 (Season 24, episode 6) as part of the 25th anniversary of the United Nations. I have no luck on finding any footage :/. *takes of detective glasses* What else interests me is that the TKB tried to set up a commune named Utopia of Cherries, and it failed. They made a musical called The Yellow Ribbon in 1972 that reflected about the experience. They made a Yellow Ribbon part 2 in 1977. In 1975 Shibata Kyohei joined the group, and the quality took a nosedive. TKB turned from experimental rock-infused craziness to Pop tunes that the whole family can listen to. The unique sound is still there though just not as good. They released 13 albums in the 5 year period from 1975-1980.

Thanks TN245 and MC for the new information about Tokyo Kid Brothers. Although I much prefer Tenjo Sajiki / J.A. Seazer, I do admit that early TKB does possess a certain charm. I'd also love to hear the original Golden Bat lp, as well as the Love and Banana ep they did with Apryl Fool from '69. (Discogs has Love and Banana for sale for $999.00 if anyone feels like taking the plunge). I believe both of these releases, or at least parts of them, appeared on the TKB boxset from the late 90s, but that seems to be about as rare as the original albums. If anyone ever gets these, hope they will put the music up on Youtube or share a link here.

That TKB boxset sold out before release in 2001, so it's the most expensive thing by far. I'd mainly want it for The Golden Bat (1971) disc and the miscellaneous recordings disc. When I was looking at Itsuro Shimoda (TKB member and writer from the early period) I did find this: http://www.t-chest.jp/shimoda/album/kiminouta.html (https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B00092QSY6) A rare CD released in 2005 that features recordings of early Tokyo Kid Brothers including 6 recordings from The Golden Bat and 5 recordings from The City. I just bought a copy. The most I've ever spent on a CD. I'll likely share it here when it arrives in a few weeks (if shipping is successful). TN, that CD on Itsuro Shimoda's site looks interesting. I'm actually wondering if I bought it back in 2005 and then sold it quickly as it wasn't very good (though I hope not) If you think it's good I'd definitely be interested in a listen. I contacted the Lincoln Center about what they've got in their archive and they've got back to me with another contact to I'll pursue that shortly. I presume being a TKB fan you've also got all the early Tenjo Sajiki stuff and Yuigonka - Endless Endless? One thing I must say about TKB's Throw Away the Books CD is that the 2009 SWAX-88 papersleeve release is really bad sound compared to the earlier Victor & P-Vine releases. Maybe that's why there are no rips floating around because no one had a good cd source.

No, it was actually released - I even remember (I believe) The Seth Man here writing about it, not being impressed, and sending it back. The '77 version of Golden Bat that was available on various blogs, which had a few songs from Throw away the Books tacked on at the end, was actually from the boxset. Who knows why that was the only thing from it which circulated.

Was The City also released as an album? I had never heard about that play before this thread. The early TKP I know of are: the Love and Banana ep, Golden Bat, Throw away the Books, Golden Bat Returns, Story of Six Dogs (English and Japanese versions), and The Moon is East The Sun is West. Was there anything else from the troupe's classic period?
