Spearmint Rhino
Dec 10, 2002, 09:54
We got a Spearmint Rhino opening up on Saturday in the middle of town – in the ‘Cultural Industries Quarter’ no less. Obviously this has created something of a stink, not least because of the absolutely massive amount of postering they’ve done to advertise it (all in the best possible taste as I’m sure you can imagine). So there’s a meeting about it tonight, and ‘what should be done’. This looks set to be a fascinating ding dong with liberals/Christians/many feminists likely to turn up and simply demand it’s closed down, and wanting to demonstrate against anyone who might consider going inside such a place (including the women workers themselves), and another bunch of people who want to unionise the workers (there is a section in the GMB) and pretty much leave it at that, and a bunch of people who want to do ‘something’ but aint sure what.

I probably fit mostly into the last category – I think the workers should be unionised, something which could end the worst abuses and excesses within the industry, and slightly turn the view of sex work around, and I’d certainly be up for defacing/subvertising the posters (hopefully with something better than just ‘global pimp’, but hey ho).

What do you think?

is that in Sheffield?

We've got a "Honeypot" topless bar just opened in Slough. MrsG went down to a planning meeting for those against it, and rapidly discovered that it was full of religous fanatics and bigots, none of whom were actually interested in the welfare of the women working there, but more using it as a springboard for their superstitious poison ...

There's a Spearmint Rhino poster right by our house too ...

Aye it is. The meeting’s been called by lefties, but I would imagine all those reactionary anti-sex types would be there as well, but hopefully we’ll outnumber them.

One of the most disturbing points raised has been a claimed (no one seems able to quote actual figures) rise in attacks on women as the blokes are being kicked out of the club.

Any one know more about that in particular?

no, but I would like to. The Honeypot has opened right up in the centre of town, with the door right by a busy pedestrian crossing. My view is that before jumping in, it's a good idea to actually go and look at the branch in Maidenhead, and see what kind of problems, if any, surround it.

If it's just blokes looking at birds tits behind smoked glass, then perhaps then leaving the GMB's sex workers branch leaflets nearby might be a more productive thing to do:

There's a Honeypot in Reading town centre as well. I hate to admit but I have actually been inside it. It wasn't my idea, we were on a stag night and such nights aren't known for their sense or taste. Though I was curious too see just how grotty the place was. Sometimes you have to know the enemy.

Needless to say the place is a shit hole and I am well embarassed about having been in there. I just sat by the entrance/exit wanting to leave. Unfortunately some people I know are highly sexist.

Most people say that even by Titty Bar standards the Honeypot is shite. People who are into such things don't think its a patch on Soho. Not that I would know of course.

Unionization would be the ideal way forward. Unfortunately if dreadful places like the Honeypot didn't exist then the women working in such a place may have to look to income else were. Which could mean them being drawn (or drawn back) into protistution and as a result have to suffer greater abuses then being given money to give some perv a quick flash of ther breasts.

Are you suggesting that lap/table/pole dancers were once prostitutes?

Don't think so mate.

Spearmint Rhino and such are indeed not particularly desirable places to visit in my opinion (except on stag nights, ahem!) but they do no harm (here comes the lambastation about sex attacks etc, but isn't this just as relevant to porn in gereral?) and the women working there are NOT exploited. I know this as some frioends of mine (all female, including my girlfriend) went to the one in London to interview girls for an article which appeared in a magazine a friend works on.
