It's some years now since we last discussed Silbaby and I haven't even thought much about it for most of those years since I must admit. I last recall that core samples had been taken and the next stage was to date it. Anyone know if that ever took place and if any conclusions were formed as to whether it was a junior Silbury or just a load of dumped earth possibly from the side of Waden Hill when the road went in?

Hi Roy, I think the result was that the mound wasn't prehistoric. I'm not sure what the conclusion was in terms of how it got there, although I do seem to remember something about waste from the road, as you've mentioned. I will try to find more info.

I've just been checking it out myself but it all seems to have come to a grinding halt. Pete (Glastonbury) was really convinced it was something special and led the charge, so he must have been really disappointed.

Yes, I met up with Pete for a walk around Avebury, this was many years ago, and remember him talking about it then. It seemed really promising and to look at some of the images of it you'd bet money on it being a silbury-in-construction. I've just flicked through Steves book to see if theres any mention but couldn't see anything.

I'd really love to get my own copy of 'British & Roman antiquities...'.
