"Trevethy Quoit is an outstanding example of a chambered tomb (also known as a portal dolmen) dating from the Early Neolithic period and is one of the best known archaeological monuments in Cornwall. It has been added to the Register as a result of increased erosion by livestock as well damage to the field and land caused by fencing. When the site came up for sale, Historic England helped to safeguard it by giving a £19,000 grant to the Cornish Heritage Trust to purchase the field. Historic England is working with the Trust and English Heritage to improve the site, protect the monument and ensure that it can still be enjoyed by local people and visitors."

I now have an update Moss...
The quoit was placed on the HAR register prior to the Trusts acquisition which was last November, so only breaking news because the list has just been published.
The hope is that it will be removed from the list in the near future as the Cornwall Heritage Trust have not been slow in determining the degree of risk. With regard to my concerns with the stability of the monument which were noted (I pointed out the huge reduction in the banking to the base of the monument over the years by the plough and stock and measured movement in the stones) it was discussed with EH in the spring and they have a very comprehensive monitoring system in place using modern technology to monitor any movement in the upright and leaning stones. Only time will tell but at the moment there are no plans for any intervention at this time.
Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Sanctuary - a possible unrecorded circle! You don't half get up to some good stuff down there. Please keep us posted with any updates :-)

That is good news Roy, it is now under the protection of Cornwall Heritage Trust, and the field itself will never be so vandalised as it was then. We have been two or three times and of course with you and Chief, and the stones have always seemed rather perilous on that little mound.

Hi Thelonious,
Yep we have a great time down here. From small beginnings I have gathered a fantastic group of stonehead volunteers and we have been granted permission to excavate some wonderful sites. As my local HAR officer recently said, 'You're one of us now', which was a wonderful gesture to the team. Those early beginnings of just reporting damage seen on days out and repairing the odd gate and fence here and there have certainly paid of as we became trusted.
The thing is, in these lack of funding and cutback days, it has created an opportunity for the likes of us here on TMA to offer our help. It has been quite amazing the progress and journey we have made from those early days and to cap it all to date, to be allowed to excavate the previously untouched Late Neolithic/Early Bronze-Age two stone circles and 300m stone row at Leskernick without an archaeologist being present, something I would never have believed possible. I walk out there on some days and just stand there amongst the remains of the Settlement and little tri-markers where the burials are and thank whoever is listening for letting me be so lucky.

For those who have only seen pix of the quoit and never seen it 'in the flesh' so to speak, here is a video I shot of it two days ago in full detail. I had to battle against the sun on occasion as you'll see, but I wanted to film it in one continuous hit. Depending on the angle or position it is filmed from, it reminds me of a house of cards in danger of collapsing!
