Farmageddon
Some local folks have asked us to let you know that all the prehistoric sites in the Avebury area are closed to the public because of the Foot & Mouth atrocity – so please don’t plan a visit until this has been resolved. The main car park in Avebury is closed, and the car park near the Post Office will be closed on weekends. People are being urged to not walk in the area, including the Ridgeway. Apart from the farm animals in the area, there is real concern for the deer population. I can’t remember a day when I’ve seen Avebury devoid of visitors. It’s an eerie sight.
I spoke to a child today who saw a funeral pyre of cattle near Melksham, not too far from here. She said it was the saddest thing she’d ever seen, and the smell was the worst thing she ever smelled.
What a price we’re paying for cheap food. Intensive farming sucks, and it’s not the fault of the farmers. How come our supermarkets are so powerful? The Big 4 are three times more profitable than the supermarkets in France and Germany. They have the British government under their collective thumb, and it was pretty funny to hear Tony Blair saying that we had to do something about intensive farming knowing how much money he personally pockets from Lord Sainsbury. I’m sure everyone here is doing what they can by supporting their local market and greengrocer – so remember to remind someone else to do the same.
We’ll let you know when the Avebury monuments are open to tbe public again.
Blessed be,
JoAnne
