Jane Tomlinson
Avebury Map

This new map of Avebury is hand-drawn by artist and writer Jane Tomlinson. Readers of On This Deity will know Jane as a regular contributor penning entries on art, feminism and the natural world.

The Avebury map features not only the ancient monuments, roads and buildings, but also historical figures, nature and activities. Maps usually strive to be objective but this one deliberately sets out to see things a different way. Jane explains: “I wanted make a portrait of Avebury and show it from more than one single point. A map was the only way to do this. I just started drawing and let my pen go. It’s my love letter to Avebury.”

The quirky map is not to scale but you can still use it to navigate your way around the village and the surrounding area. Look out for druids, dowsers, Romans and mad thatched walls.

The map available here is size A2 and comes folded in a colour cover. Flat maps, signed and suitable for framing are available from www.janetomlinson.com/shop/maps/
