Oh my god! just dug the Ruby Trax cds out and was confronted with Billy Bragg doing the Three Degrees When Will I See You Again? It comes on like Tiffany's version of I think we're alone now and then the funky electro bass kicks in just like the Nick Straker Band's A Walk In the Park. Forgive me Head Heritagers for I know toooooo much kak pop. (but everything is OK cos the Mary Chain Grunge in for the next cover - Little Red Rooster)

Husker Du's desecration of 8 Miles High by now! Mouldy Bob's vast nervous breakdown in the last verse is HILARIOUS and more meaningful than a marble obelisk at the end of the puniverse. If this version doesn't have you weeping into your mushroom tea, it's because you've had your soul devoured by secret Pentagon mind-bacteria. And the guitar sound - wtf?!?! Hot Satan - it is a caudron of broiling disasterousness!!!!!!!!

There's a quote from the movie 'crossroads': 'that ain't the way the song goes.. you got to take the music some place else.. take it past where ya found it.' Amen. If you can't do something different witha cover, don't bother. Dare I say The Bangles' Hazy Shade of Winter made me look at the song a new way...? Best cover in my life: Tori Amos doing Smells Like Teen Spirit. It's a total revelation...slow, soulful, dark and scary. A mate did it her way at one of his gigs and the crowd didn't know whether to applaud or throw things.
